LOSTies Christmas Photo Shoot 2011

Merry Chrissie to the best guild mates I could ever ask for.

Thanks to everyone that came for our guild Christmas photo shoot!  We found a great spot in the Hall of Explorers in Ironforge.  Immediately after the photo we went caroling in Orgrimmar.  After that festive, fun wipefest we had a blast through inter-guild war games.  We also learned a new word: pitchaw.  Ask Nicky aka Ace what it means.  PITCHAW!

Here is a list of the guild mates that came to our LOSTies Christmas photo shoot:

Tidesroyale
Humph
Andaph
Nyetitalltwo/Fade
Spadesfrost
Mirandah
Marderon
Ace
Killerkilman
Faldon
Kyreal
Hidytwo
Grayjosh
Kimchii
Cybyl

Special shout out to Hidytwo, Mirandah, Andaph, Kyreal and Kyah for helping gather mats so Tides could make the Chrissie suits for the guild Chrissie photo!

If you missed out on tonight's photo shoot, we can take another Christmas photo tonight after our LOSTies Secret Santa event.  I've made Christmas cards using our guild Chrissie photos. Merry Chrisse, LOSTies!

Caroling in Orgrimmar! Merry Christmas to you too, Horde.

Town Hall Meeing 12.18.11

As we are on the brink of Christmas, LOSTies held its town hall meeting thousands of miles away from home base in the Frozen Sea.  Here is a recap of what we discussed:

New Raiding Changes:

If you would like to join us for normal Cata raids (BWD, ToTFW, BoT), the following is required:
  • equipped average ilvl 347+
  • pull 10K+ deeps if you're a deeps role
  • mostly pve gear
  • most gear pieces enchanted and gemmed
  • ventrilo (at least be able to hear us)
  • watch all anticipated boss fights or read the text based guides (links provided on right-hand side of guild blog under All things WoW, titled "Icy-veins text based raid guides")

If you would like to join us for normal Firelands raid, the following is required:
  • equipped average ilvl 355+
  • pull well over 15K deeps if you're a deeps role
  • absolutely no pvp gear
  • ALL appropriate enchants, gems and reforges according to askmrrobot.com, this includes the exalted shoulder inscriptions from Therazane's Throne and whatever helm arcanum is appropriate for your class
  • ventrilo
  • watch all anticipated boss fights or read the text based guides (link provided on right-hand side of guild blog under All things WoW, titled "Icy-veins text based raid guides")
If you would like to join us for normal Dragon Soul raid, the following is required:

  • equipped average ilvl 375+
  • pull well over 18K deeps if your'e a deeps role
  • absolutely no pvp gear
  • ALL appropriate enchants, gems and reforges according to askmrrobot.com, this includes the exalted shoulder inscriptions from Therazane's Throne and whatever helm arcanum is appropriate for your class
  • ventrilo
  • watch all anticipated boss fights or read the text based guides (link provided on right-hand side of guild blog under All things WoW, titled "Dragon Soul Text Guide" and "Icy-veins text based raid guides")
* IMPORTANT ~ One thing I forgot to mention during the meeting is that the deadline for all guild mates getting the Therazane's Throne shoulder inscriptions and appropriate helm arcanums is Wednesday, January 11th at 12am server time.  I have been far too lenient in allowing people to come on raids without these really cheap yet powerful enchants.  This deadline gives you more than three week's time to farm reputation with Therazane and the other faction necessary for your class.  It is worth noting that if you have already reached exalted with the appropriate faction for the helm arcanum you need, their arcanums are BOA (bind on account) so you can purchase their helm arcanums for any other 85s you have.  However, for Therazane you must hit friendly on each character for a weaker inscription then hit exalted on each character to unlock the powerful inscription for your shoulders.

We like to keep our raids chill, fun and respectful.  We harbor no elitists in our guild.  All guild mates are welcome to join us for raids so long as they are geared and know the fights.  If you need help getting geared for normal Cata raids and Firelands raids, I've created two guides.  On the right-hand side of the guild blog, under the "QUICKies" list of links, click on "getting geared" to be directed to the guides.  I will be posting a brief guide/checklist soon covering how to get geared to join LOSTies for Dragon Soul raids.

LOSTies Raid Teams:

We've reached the point where we are just shy two people of being able to do 25-man raids.  The only problem is getting everyone's availability for raiding and getting others geared.  Also, a couple of the guild mates have experienced lag in 25-man raids. We will perhaps give it a go and if it is really bad, we will stick to having two separate ten-man raiding teams.  At the moment, both teams are just shy of two guild mates.  Team #1 will raid on Fridays and Sundays while Team #2 will raid on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Even if there are no raids scheduled on the calendar, always anticipate at least one or two raid nights to fall anywhere between Thursday and Sunday, between 6:30 and 9:30 pm server time.  Having two separate raiding teams raid on two different days out of the week works out nicely because if you are unable to make it to one of your team's designated raid nights, you are more than welcome to join the other raid team on either of their raid nights should they have an opening for you on any other geared 85 characters you have.

To find out which team you have been assigned to and for more info on the two raiding teams, please click on this LOSTies Raid Teams link.  For future reference, you can also find a link to it on the right-hand side of the guild blog under QUICKies, labeled "LOSTies Raiding Teams."

Raid Checkups:

If you feel you are ready to join either of the two raiding teams on any of their two raid nights and know that there is an opening, you must meet with any of the officers responsible for leading a particular raid night.  Raid checkups entail:
  1. A gear check to make sure you have all proper gems, enchants and reforges.  Officers will pull up askmrrobot.com and click the optimize button for your character and compare it with your currently equipped gear.
  2.  If you are a deeps role, you will also undergo a five minute dummy trial to make sure you are pulling well over 18K deeps.
  3.  Test questions.  The officer will ask at least two random questions to make sure you know the fight.  Or they may ask you to give a brief summary of the fight such as explaining the different phases.

To find out which officer will be leading which raid, look on the guild calendar and pull up whichever day you are interested in signing up for.  Officers will schedule a "guild event" for the raid night(s) they will lead, so all interested can sign up.  Notice!  Signing up for this particular guild event will not guarantee you a slot for that raid night.  It is only a method for you to find out which officer is leading what specific raid and know who to consult for a raid checkup.  After a successful raid checkup, the officer will schedule an "event" for the actual raid that way they can invite only those who have completed their raid checkup and are given the OK to join.

  • Because our raids fall between Thursday and Sunday, if you'd like to join for a raid you must meet with the designated officer for whichever raid night you prefer before Wednesday at 7pm server time.
  • Also, the instructions for raid checkups apply to everyone, including those already assigned to a raid team.  That way those assigned to a raid team who are missing a couple of the requirements can give their slot up to someone that is prepared for a particular raid.  The only difference is that those assigned to a raid team already must join their designated team.  However, if their alt 85s are prepared for the raid, they are free to join either raid teams.

 LOSTies Holiday Events

Secret Santa
deadline to submit name for entry:  Tuesday 20th @ 7pm server time
actual event:  Saturday 24th @ 6:30pm server time

Let's all take this opportunity to show each other just how much we appreciate the true sense of camaraderie that's set our guild apart from all others!  There is no minimum amount of gold/time necessary in purchasing/crafting/farming for that perfect gift for whoever you are assigned to be Secret Santa for.  Just be creative!  I trust everyone will be fair in thinking of what to gift their fellow guild mate.  If you get stumped and need some tips as to what to get for your partner, feel free to ask me.  Some ideas might be expensive enchants or a bundle of gems or nice companion pets.  Look up their character on askmrrobot.com and click the optimize button to find out what they could use for raids.  Also, Nicky aka Ace brought up a great idea:  On the guild roster for your character's public note, offer a hint as to what to get you for Christmas in-game.  Another tip:  Gift wrap can be purchased from the goblin holiday vendors in Stormwind's Trade Districe or in front of the Ironforge Bank.

If you are interested in joining us for Secret Santa, you must mail Sadcap an in-game mail message before the deadline.  Include your name in the message and be sure to greet him a happy holiday!  Sadcap is a non-guild mate but a trusted friend of LOSTies and has volunteered to help us organize our Secret Santa event.  Be sure to thank him in your message.  Shortly after the deadline, Sadcap will mail you the name of who you have been assigned to.  I understand many of us may be traveling or spending time with family in RL, so if you are unable to make the Secret Santa event this Saturday, you are free to either meet with your guild mate before the event or you can leave the gift with me so they can open it with everyone else at the event.  Merry Chrissie, LOSTies!

Christmas Photo Shoot
Friday 23rd @ 7pm server
Everyone welcome, the more the merrier!  Let's get as many of the guild mates in on this one so we can get a huge LOSTies Christmas picture!  I will be handing out Red Winter Garb suits and Winter Boots.  If you would like to help, I need all the Wool Cloth, Rugged Leather and Copper Bars I can get and would greatly appreciate any help you could offer!

Let's make this a professional and great Christmas photo by:
  • removing all gear except for the winter suits and guild tabard
  • dismissing all pets
  • removing the title in your character's name (so we can see everyone's name, only fair)
  • refraining from using magic abilities that will result in an unclear picture
I'm hoping to submit our Christmas picture for the WoW community site's screenshot of the day feature.  Think of it as a special Christmas gift to me and all your guild mates!

Caroling in Stormwind and Orgrimmar
Friday 23rd immediately after the guild Christmas photo shoot

Let's show the alliance on our server that we can out-best them in Christmas spirit! We will not be caroling in ventrilo, so don't worry.  All we will be doing is standing together professionally and typing a few lyrics to Christmas Carols in Stormwind Trade District.  After a few minutes of that we will go to the gates of Orgrimmar and present ourselves in the same manner.  We may die to them cos let's face it, Horde on Kalecgos server are just plain jerks.  However, even jerks deserve to be treated kindly during the holidays.  Think of it as our gift to them.  Also, I'm sure many of them will think we're nicer and most def more kickass compared to the other Alliance guilds on Kalacgos.  We will die honoring the Christmas spirit!  Merry Chrissie, LOSTies!

LOSTies "Spirit of Christmas" Contest
deadline for submissions:  Saturday 24th @ midnight

Who says there isn't any room for competition during the holidays? I welcome it as long as it fosters a true sense of camaraderie and helps bring joy to others!  Your objective in this contest is to travel Azeroth and Outlands in search of the Christmas Spirit.  Do your best in capturing the Christmas Spirit in ONE screen-shot!  Be creative!  Do you see it in a bustling crowd of players in a city?  Or perhaps it's in the form of a creature?  How about a humble abode with a meager family enjoying Christmas the best they can?  Preferably, try not to include your UI (user interface) in your screen-shot.  Ask guild mates in-game if you're not sure how to hide the interface.  Include a caption with your screen-shot describing what the Christmas spirit means to you.  Email your sumbission to Tides at wowlosties@gmail.com before the midnight deadline!  Everyone's submissions will be posted onto the guild blog and the winner's submission and caption will be featured!  G'luck and Merry Chrissie, LOSTies!
  • 1st Prize:  Your choice of x1 mount and x1 pet from the Blizzard online store (or x2 pets if you already have both mounts)
  • 2nd Prize:  Your choice of x1 pet from the Blizzard online store
  • 3rd Prize:  500 gold and a random companion pet (not from online store)

LOSTies' First Lord Rhyolith and Other Kill Shots

LOSTies' first Lord Rhyolith kill, 12.13.11

With UI.

Our first Lord Rhyolith kill!  Before attempting him we also downed Shannox and Beth'tilac the same raid night.  The Shannox encounter was so funny cos Mirandah and Vrill got trapped in the crystal poison traps together twice!  Although the first one didn't count cos it was an accidental pull.  I really wish we could have taken a picture of that.  We downed Lord Rhyolith in three attempts.  Shout outs to the driving team: Jay aka Exhalted, Vrill and Chris aka Andaph as the driving team lead.  Good on ya, LOSTies!

Raid Composition:

LOSTies Raid Teams

The Sorting Hat has been summoned from his dusty bookshelf!  Our guild has reached the point where we are having to ask a couple guild mates to sit out on raids.  No worries; we should have enough to get two ten-man raiding teams going.  Please refer below to find out which raiding team you have been placed in.  Both teams have been created with your main character (highest geared) enlisted because these teams are aimed at Firelands and Dragon Soul raid progression.  Your geared off spec 85s are more than welcome to join the other raid team for their raid nights if they have slots open. However, do not join another raid team with your main 85 if it will cause your main 85 to be locked from joining your actual raid team if you raid on a later raid night in the week.   Also, we want to give the guild mates on the Reserve List the opportunity to join a raid night if they are geared and available.

  • Just because your name does not appear doesn't mean we won't be taking you on raids.  It is not guaranteed that every raid member will show up for both of their team's raid nights, so this is where we can take geared people from the Reserve roster.  If you would like to be bumped up from the reserve list onto one of the two teams, consult the officers and let them know which raid nights are more preferable for you.  You must be geared and able to generally make at least one raid night a week to be placed onto a raid team.

  • These teams are effective immediately.  Team #1 will raid on Fridays and Sundays and Team #2 will raid on Thursdays and Saturdays.  Both teams will raid from 6:30 to 9:30 pm server time.  Your alt level 85s will be added to the reserve list as well and you are free to join the other raid team on their raid days with your alt 85s.
  • If you would like to raid with our guild, please refer to the "getting geared" link on the right-hand side of the guild page and meet with any of the officers for a raid checkup.  Cheers!
  • If you don't see your name on any of the lists, it is because you haven't expressed an interest in raiding with us yet. Please consult any of the officers and we will add you to the list.
  • ImportantYou must meet with whichever officer will be leading any given raid night for a raid checkup first before you are invited to the raid.  Please do not wait last minute to do a raid checkup. Ideally you should meet with them as soon as you can, but you meet with them before Wednesday because Thursday through Sunday are the raid days for both teams.
  • If you have any questions about getting geared for raids, on the right-hand side of our guild blog there is a link labeled "getting geared." Be sure to read that and feel free to consult any of the officers or Tides.
  • If you would like Tides to add any information to your note on the Raid Team rosters, please consult him in-game.

(Names with an asterisk symbol are alt 85 characters of players already assigned to a raid team on their main 85.  If geared, these alt 85s are welcome to join the other raid team that their main 85 is not assigned to. If your name does not appear on this list or any of the Raid Teams and you would like it to, please consult Tides.)

LOSTies Raid Comp. & Evaluations

G'day, LOSTies.  We're growing as a guild so I decided to make a list of those who have expressed interest in raiding with us and those who have already raided with us.  I've left out those who have become inactive but I will add them as soon as they return and I will continue to add those who would like to join us for raids.  Keep in mind, the numbers or order in the list mean nothing.  All this is is a list of those who have raided with us and next to their names are the roles they've joined us as.  Everything is based off my observations.  The order of the roles everyone has is such:  the role you thrive in comes first, followed by other roles you have experience raiding with us as, and the last role is one that you've either stopped joining us as, lost interest with, or one that you've raided with the least or not at all but have expressed interest in.  Also, just because you don't have multiple roles next to your name, it certainly doesn't mean you have less raid value.  I value the raid as a whole; everyone brings some unique value to the guild.  This list is just a reference for me and the officers when we are planning for raids.  Remember, this list will grow and I will update it when necessary.

The A-list

Key:
T = tank
TH = tank heals
RH = raid heals
RD = ranged deeps
MD = melee deeps (not doctor, nub)

Also, I will be doing raid evaluations with everyone, including the officers.  This is my one-on-one time with everyone so that I can assess everyone's raid activity.  I don't always have the time to thank you and point out your strengths in much greater detail, and I don't like to single anyone out as well and give them constructive criticism.  I assure you we are in no way an elitist guild.  Everyone is welcome to our raids as long as they make an effort to get geared and properly gemmed and enchanted (again, we can always help but you need to show initiative), watch the raid boss videos I've posted on our guild blog, and shows up to raids ready to have a blast and be respectful to everyone.  I have a midterm this Wednesday and next Thursday, so anticipate raid evaluations after next Thursday.  Cheers!

Lord Ryolith: 10-Man Guides

LOSTies Firelands Raid Requirements:

  • At least 355+ avg ilvl
  • Absolutely no pvp gear
  • All proper gems and enchants (consult elitist jerks.com or askmrrobot.com)
  • Raid checkup with either Tides, Ryan aka Imnotferal or Jay aka Humph
  • Watch the Firelands boss video guides posted on guild blog (Take notes cos I will ask questions to make sure you took the time to watch the videos.  This goes for everyone, including officers.  I will exclude you from the raid if you don't answer properly.  You only need to watch one of the videos per boss if I've uploaded multiple guides.)
  • Ventrilo (At least be able to hear us)
  • Bring a smile  :]
If you aren't quite geared yet, it's not the end of the road for you.  Be sure to join guild mates for heroics and make sure you are doing both Mount Hyjal and Molten Front dailies.  If you need help with gems and enchants, obtain all the mats and bring them to our guild enchanters and jewel crafters.  Be sure to work on getting reputation with the Cataclysm factions to get the spec appropriate arcanum (helm enchant) as well as working on getting exalted with Therazane's Throne to get the shoulder enchant.

LOSTies' First Shannox Kill & some announcements

Great job downing Shannox! It took us three goes tonight and oddly enough the final attempt was very sloppy but we made a great recovery and made it with all ten guild mates standing.  Thanks for your team efforts.

Raid Composition:

Nicky aka Ace ~ Main Tank
Ryan aka Imnotferal ~ Offtank
Mirandah ~ Tank Heals

Adam aka Spadesfrost ~ Deeps
Mattie aka Marderon ~ Deeps
Chris aka Andaph ~ Deeps
Joe aka Specops ~ Deeps
Liam aka Killerkillman ~ Deeps

From now on we'll be attempting the other Firelands bosses.  I will be posting Firelands boss video guides soon so keep checking the guild blog and be sure to watch the videos if you'd like to be included in our next Firelands raid. Firelands is a much harder raid compared to the other raids we've done so I need to comply with strict requirements.  Please be sure to read the requirements on our guild calendar before signing up.

I've schedule an FL garbo run for this Wednesday at 8pm server time, and an actual Firelands raid this Friday at 8pm server time.  Please do not feel bad if we are unable to take you with us for Firelands raids.  If you aren't quite geared for Firelands yet, don't hesitate to ask for help.  We are always getting full guild groups for random Zandalari troll heroics, be sure to join us for those.

Also, I'd like to bring back our PVP nights. I've scheduled this Saturday night as a PVP night to give us all a break from raiding.  We will use that night to get everyone geared through battlegrounds/arenas and have a bit of friendly inter-guild competition through wargames. We'll try this on Saturday night and we'll try to incorporate at least one night a week designated as a strictly PVP night for those interested in getting geared for arenas and rated battlegrounds.  If you have any questions about arenas please ask Ralphie aka Thuglife.  He's our Warmonger/PVP officer.  You can also ask Adam aka Spades or Jay aka Humph.  I would love for our guild to get its kickass on!

LOSTies Conclave of Wind Kill

The only editing I do is to make sure I keep the videos under the 10 minute limit. I'd like for you to see what I experience on our guild's raid nights.  At every raid night, before we pull the first boss I like to have our guild form a circle and I like to play a song or do an icebreaker/mini contest just to loosen everyone up and remind them that this is just a game and the main idea is to have a blast.  I originally planned to have a part II to this video showing the loot that dropped that night and our antics that happened after but it takes forever to upload these videos so I may just focus on bringing more raid fights, raid boss intel and rare elite spawn videos.  Be sure to watch in HD, 720p format for a much clearer viewing. Cheers!

Tanking Halfus Wyrmbreaker

I realize just how much we hate Halfus Wyrmbreaker. But bloody hell we've got to kill the bastard. Tanking the encounter with two tanks is doable, but we can actually increase our success with three tanks. I found a really nice guide that's meant for pally tanks, but it definitely has some nice pointers for all tanks and even a few for the healers. Credit for this guide goes to Matt Walsh from WoW Insider.

Here is a direct link to his guide: The Light and How to Swing It: Tanking the Bastion of Twilight, part 1

Here is a link to a nifty website that shows the drake combination that spawns with Halfus for the week: Halfus' Drakes Spawn of the Week

Below I will copy and paste the gist of the guide along with some helpful comments from other WoW players.

Halfus and his merry band of drakes

This is one of the first fights in a long time that gets easier the more tanks you add. Likewise, the onus for the success of your raid against Halfus will be left pretty squarely on the shoulders of your tanking corps.

When the fight starts, there will be three of five possible drakes available to be unleashed. Each gives a buff to the boss just by being conscious, while each will also debuff the boss when unlocked from their chains/cages. As each drake dies, moreover, Halfus will take a stacking debuff that increases damage received. These debuffs are the key to beating the enrage timer, especially for a raid group stepping into Bastion for the first few times.

Let's talk about the drakes and what each means to you:

Nether Scion If awake, it gives Halfus the Frenzied Assault buff; when unlocked, it debuffs the boss with Nether Blindness. Nominally, this drake increases the damage the boss will do to you, but that is heavily mitigated by its debuff.

Orphaned Emerald Whelps If awake, these give Halfus' Proto-Behemoth flying overhead the Scorching Breath ability; if unlocked, they debuff the Proto-Behemoth's raid damage with Atrophic Poison. These really are more of a concern for the healers, though you should use the breaths as an opportunity to weave glyphed Divine Protection and an equipped Mirror of Broken Images to mitigate the incoming magical damage.

Slate Dragon This is the most tank-centric of the five drakes. When awake, he gives Halfus the ability to use Malevolent Strikes, which is basically a mortal strike debuff. This necessitates a tank swap. Though, do note that using Divine Shield will purge these off you. Nonetheless, when unlocked, Halfus will be afflicted with Stone Touch and will periodically be stunned for 12 seconds.

Storm Rider When awake, this drake grants the Shadow Nova ability to the boss. If you're tanking Halfus, keep in mind you and some other lucky interrupt will need to alternate preventing that ability from going off. Also, don't tank Halfus by the edge, as hilarious as casting all the melee into an abyss would be. Anyway, when unlocked, it'll debuff Halfus with Cyclone Winds which basically makes Shadow Nova actually interruptable.

Time Warden When awake, this drake grants the Proto-Behemoth the ability to unleash a Fireball Barrage on the raid. When unlocked, it'll debuff the Proto-Behemoth with Time Dilation, making the fireballs much less infrequent. To frame this in tanking terms, you know what's a great way to be gibbed while tanking multiple drakes? Standing in one of the circles and getting hit by a fireball. Watch out!

Round 'em up and burn 'em down

The best way to handle the drakes, honestly, is just to release them all. The setup my raid usually uses is this: I'll tank two adjacent drakes, a second tank is on Halfus, and a third tank is on the third drake. Each tank unlocks a drake at pull or pulls Halfus, and the remaining one is unlocked by a hunter and immediately misdirected to its assignment.

Pile them all up in the middle, facing the drakes towards the door you came in from, while the raid is behind the mess and safely away from any breaths. Then, let the splash damage do a chunk of the work for you. Burn each drake down one by one, until only Halfus remains. The whelps (if up) can be generally ignored, since splash damage will slowly knock them off.

When you've got the pile engaged, I find it helps to generate initial -- and insurmountable -- threat on your assignment, and then target one of the whelps and start banging away with Hammer of the Righteous, spending Holy Power on Inquisition. Follow up with more HotRs, Consecration, Avenger's Shield -- any AOE you can throw at the group.

The reason you want to take the whelps is that because they are so low-level that your attacks' chances to miss or be dodged/parried are much lower. Once the whelps are dead (or if they weren't up that week), target a drake. Avoid targetting Halfus till last, since his raid boss, skull level will inflict painful miss rates on you.

If you find the damage intake is too much for the healers off the bat but you're well ahead of the enrage timer, you could always bring in a fourth tank (likely an off-spec DPSer) to tank a drake, thus reducing the amount of damage one of the tanks will be tanking. On the flip side of the coin, if you want to make things interesting, you can two-tank it (because Danger is your middle name, and so forth).

However, damage intake shouldn't be too rough with proper use of cooldowns. When the fight first starts, you might as well pop Guardian of Ancient Kings to remove the terror of those first few, deadly seconds. Follow up with Ardent Defender if things look especially hairy, while saving Divine Protection and Mirror of Broken Images for any magic damage spike moments (specifically if whelps are up and the Proto-Behemoth has those enhanced breaths). Also, not standing in the fireballs does wonders!

"Rawr."

At 50%, Halfus will enter phase 2, so make sure all the drakes you intend to release are dead before then. From this point on, he'll periodically unleash a Furious Roar that will knock down the entire raid three times.

The part where this can introduce problems is if a barrage of fireballs is descending upon the raid in the middle of a Roar. However, anyone can successfully strafe out of a flaming circle before the payload is delivered, even when punctuated by three tumbles. Just hold down your strafe key until you're safely out of danger.

Also, if there's a Shadow Nova to interrupt, Furious Roar can faciliate one of those getting off. Make sure you have contingency plans for those moments, like a mage blinking through the last tick of the Roar and then counterspelling. You can also put Hand of Protection on someone so they can get an interrupt off, or even use Divine Shield to retain your footing.

Very shortly, the big guy will be reduced to 0%. All in all, the fight isn't terribly difficult. The hardest part of the whole thing is keeping all the abilities straight the first time you go in there.

Lastly, don't forget: There's an achievement for knocking all your melee DPSers into the chasm behind Halfus' veranda with a Shadow Nova.

Here are some tips from other WoW players:

In normal mode, 3 drakes are "awake" regardless of 10 or 25 raid size. In Heroic mode, all 5 drakes are active on both sizes.

There are a lot of different options for how you can release drakes in 10-man. You can bring a 3rd tank if you have a plate dps with an off-spec and acceptable gear, but you can 2-tank it just fine. Overall, I suggest letting out two drakes right at the start on 10-man. We have one tank hold both drakes while the other takes Halfus. Or one tank can have Halfus + drake while the other has just a drake. Feel free to try both to see what works, but I personally recommend 2 drakes on one tank, Halfus on the other.

Either way, letting two drakes out at the start means very heavy damage on the tank that has two mobs, especially if that tank has Halfus and stacks of MS. (I really recommend just Halfus on one tank if there is the MS debuff.) You want to use your cooldowns early. Plan with your healers what order you will use cooldowns in so you don't overlap too much. If you can survive long enough to kill one drake, the fight will get much easier.

As for which 2 of the 3 drakes to let out, I suggest this priority order:

1. Storm Rider
2. Time Warden
3. Nether Whelps
4. Nether Scion
5. Slate Dragon

You always want to release Storm Rider right away. You NEED to be able to interrupt that Nova or the extra shadow damage every 10 or less seconds plus the knockback making it harder to heal will destroy your raid. (I've seen a few rare raids leave Storm chained for a while, but this is a crazy idea and NOT recommended!)

The only time you need to release Nether Scion is if the Slate Dragon is active. If both are active, the MS buff will stack up very fast. Releasing Nether is the best way to mitigate this. You MUST release Nether at the start if Slate is present. It might seem weird that Nether is so far down the list because of this. Yet if Slate and Nether are present, then only one other drake is. Thus if you follow the list, you'll find that Nether is always one of the two drakes you release if Slate is present.

Time is very useful to release since he allows the raid to dodge the fireballs. This vastly reduces raid damage. In fact, if your drake combo is Time/Slate/Nether then there will be NO raid damage if your raiders dodge the fireballs! (Until 50%.) Releasing Whelps also reduces raid damage taken, but does not eliminate it. Both are great to release. The only combo that complicates this is Time/Whelps/Storm. Since you need to release Storm, you can only release one of the "raid damage" drakes. In this case, Whelps is possibly the better release choice. Though you can't dodge the Fireballs, releasing the Whelps still reduces their damage plus the damage of the Breath. On the other hand, releasing the Time essentially eliminates one source of damage. With just the full power Breath, damage is much spikier, but also more predictable. Try both to see which works better for you.

Finally, releasing Slate is not important. The other four drakes are much better at mitigating the buff effects than Slate is. The stun is nifty, but won't necessarily let you drop MS stacks. Look at it this way: Slate's debuff is only present 12 seconds of every 42 seconds. (Stunned 12 seconds, active 30 seconds.) It's effects are felt for less than half of the fight. The other four drakes debuffs are active 100% of the time. Do you want something that's active 30% of the time or 100%?

Should you release the 3rd drake after the other 2 die? For the Storm/Time/Whelps combo, I say YES. Things can get out of hand during the sub 50% Shouts for a group that is new to Halfus if Whelps or Time is not killed. The reduced raid damage is very nice. For all the other combos, it's not necessary at all. Releasing and killing that third drake makes tanking and healing this fight easier and also lets the DPS get higher numbers on Halfus, but if you can kill 2 drakes you've all but got the fight won anyway so it's just a luxury.

There ya go, some tips for 10-man! They work really well for my raid group, but you might need to tweak them for yours. Oh, one other note: Hand of Protection. If you (the paladin) is tanking the drakes, you can use HoP on the other tank to clear MS stacks off. The other tank needs to cancel the HoP aura right away so Halfus doesn't smoosh a healer. Using HoP or Divine Shield to wipe of MS stacks is highly recommended!

I would recommend using three tanks for Halfus if the MS debuff is present (two tanks on Halfus, swapping to drop stacks, and the other tank on the drakes and whelps). Between Vengeance and the stacking debuff Halfus gets as the fight goes on, it's not uncommon to see each tank averaging 25k DPS or more on Halfus, which is enough to down him comfortably without straining the healers.

Also, paladin tanks can make a macro to cast Hand of Protection followed by Hand of Freedom to drop the stacks, then instantly dispell the bubble before Halfus runs to a healer.

/cancelaura Divine Shield
/cast Divine Shield

In our guild as prot pally it makes it easier for me to take Halfus first when Nether is up, we usually only pick two drakes and two tank it, OT picks up one, hunter MD's to him and I bubble after my stacks reach about 11, but that number depends greatly on your gear and heals. By the time he has to taunt Halfus off of me the first drake is dead and we taunt off eachother at about 6 stacks through the fight. The bubble macro gives us some time to kill the drakes and makes switching much easier.

Cata Raiding Patch 4.2 Checklist

So you're interested in raiding with LOSTies. Great choice! Although we are a casual social raiding/pvp guild, it doesn't mean we raid any less than other raiding guilds out there. I just like to use the term "casual" in the sense that we keep things chill. We are all willing to learn the raids together and respect each other, all the while having a blast with our guild mates. Another nice factor is that we don't hold it against you if you aren't able to join us for raids on any given night. I also ensure that our raiding environments are more about fun and team-building rather than stress and arguments.

At the same time, I'd like for us to maintain a professional raid group each week. If you feel you are ready to raid with us, please go over the Cata Raiding Patch 4.2 Checklist I've included in this post. If you have any questions or inquiries, please consult Tides, Jay a.k.a. Swansong, and Scottie a.k.a. Fade. You will also need to meet with any one of us for a raid checkup.

Aside from this blog post, please read a more in-depth guide by referring to the QUICKies list on the right-hand side of the guild blog and click on the link entitled "getting geared," then read the post entitled "Gearing Up for Cataclysm Raids."

Our official raid day with our allied raiding guild, Dunder Mifflin Inc., is Saturdays at 8pm server time. Our unofficial raid day for just us LOSTies is Fridays at 8pm server time for the time being until we all decide on a time for either Friday or Sunday.

At present, we currently need at least two more tanks, another druid, a warlock, a death knight and a shadow priest. However, all are welcome to join us as long as they are geared and are willing to learn in a chill environment. We look forward to having you join us for raids. Cheers!

Gearing Up for Cataclysm Raids

If you would like to get geared for Cataclysm raids, the best thing to do is farming heroics. Grouping up with guild mates will prevent a lot of stress and keep the game fun. Be sure to ask in guild chat if anyone would like to join for heroics before queuing up by yourself. Also, feel free to whisper anyone from Dunder Mifflin Inc (our allied raiding guild) to see if they are able to group up for heroics. If you would like to start joining our guild for raids, please have at least an average item level of 350. Avoid having PVP gear on, because the resilience stats it offers are useless. They limit your deeps and leave you quite squishy in boss encounters. Please consult Tides or Scottie (Natchos) for a raid checkup if you are interested in joining us for raids.

Our official raid day with Dunder Mifflin is Saturdays at 8pm server time. Our unofficial raid day for just our guild is Fridays at 7pm server time, or possibly Sundays at an earlier time. This time could change depending on what the guild favors most. We shall come up with an official guild-only raid day once we find out everyone's preferable schedule.

** If you would like to raid with us, please send an in-game message to Tides with your spec, current average item level, and raiding availability for Fridays and Sundays.**

Other aspects of gearing up for raids that shouldn't be overlooked are your gems, enchants, and other modifiers made possible through the various trade professions. I will keep this blog post updated as we get new gear modifier recipes from other guild mates, or when other guild mates have learned the same recipes so we don't have to rely on one person. If you have a maxed trade profession and would like to offer your services to the guild, please let Tides know so this blog post can be kept up to date. Scroll down to the end of this post to see the list of raid gear modifier recipes.

One final method in gearing for the new Firelands raid is by means of Firelands Garbo Runs. These are runs in which we form a raid to kill just the garbo inside the new Firelands raid to raise our reputation with the new Avengers of Hyjal faction. There are vendors inside the Firelands raid instance that sell very nice gear. Once you hit at least friendly reputation standing with them you should be able to purchase nice upgrades. We will set an offical night for our Firelands Garbo Runs.

** Please read up on this quick guide to Firelands Garbo Runs. It's the bloody bee's knees! **

An important reminder for those who wish to raid with us. Please know the fights. Watch the boss fight video tutorials on Youtube. This is absolutely required. I post the video guides for the raid bosses we farm on this blog for your convenience. I've enabled quick access to these raid video guides by means of the QUICKies list of links to the right-hand side of the guild blog. If videos aren't enough, make use of this excellent text-based guide to all the Cataclysm raids. Also, please make use of the elitistjerks website. It is such a great resource for learning to play and gear your class (click on the forums link for an in-depth coverage of your class). I've included it as a link in this post as well as a link under the WoW related resources located on the right-hand side of the guild blog. Please be able to pull at least 10K deeps. The proper gear, gear modifiers, raid boss encounter knowledge and class skill will ensure that you will be joining us as a successful raider. Thanks for your cooperation, LOSTies! Cheers!
